A CrossFit Athlete’s Secret Weapon: Chiropractic
Chances are, you’ve been hearing the buzz on CrossFit for the past several years, with devotees making a clear lifestyle shift to accommodate their training schedule. CrossFit recently crossed 5,000 affiliates worldwide, and has been doubling every two years.
What Is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a program developed to offer a full-body workout that combines elements of cardio, weight lifting, gymnastics, core training and more to prepare the body for the unexpected.
According to the CrossFit website: “CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.”
This high-intensity workout is extremely varied and all about getting the most bang for your workout buck. A CrossFitter will likely never do the same routine twice in one week and each workout will usually last between 45 minutes to an hour.
CrossFit gyms are usually large warehouses (often referred to as the “box”) which offer group classes where an individual may choose to workout anywhere between three to five times a week. CrossFit coaches either develop their own daily workout or follow the “WOD” or Workout of the Day from the CrossFit website.
Chiropractic and CrossFit
CrossFit and Chiropractic are both lifestyle philosophies with the ultimate goal of maximizing the potential of the human body. The two philosophies are mutually beneficial. Regular chiropractic care improves the performance of the CrossFit athlete while CrossFit workouts help sustain the benefits of chiropractic care. By combining the two programs we are able to reduce the amount of injuries suffered by athletes everywhere as well as improve the health and performance of our communities.
Chiropractic care tailored for the CrossFit athlete can address the muscles, nerves, and joints that are used during movements. When your body is not balanced and/or muscles are not firing correctly, this predisposes you to not only a poor performance but injury as well. Because the CrossFit workouts are typically done in a group setting, the peer competition helps elevate the intensity of the workout, and sometimes beyond the fitness level of participants, thereby resulting in injury.
Regular chiropractic care can also improve performance. In 1991 a study was performed that tested athletic abilities like power, reaction time, agility and balance. The athletes that did not receive chiropractic care showed a 1% increase in performance after 6 weeks while those receiving chiropractic care showed an 18% increase in performance. After 12 weeks of chiropractic treatment the athletes had a whopping 30% improvement.
