Geriatric Care and Chiropractic

Aging is a natural and normal process which each person must undergo. Part of this aging process involves the deterioration of tissues, especially of the spine. Why this happens is easily understood: the elastic discs and supporting ligaments have lost much of their ability to stretch and move due to aging, and are therefore less flexible. As a person ages, the muscles which help to maintain the spine in its normal alignment begin to lose the tone needed to maintain balance.
Chronic conditions associated with the process of aging, such as degenerative arthritis, circulatory disorders, constipation, osteoporosis, menopause and stiffness of various joints, may benefit from chiropractic care.
Chiropractic adjustments have a long list of benefits for the older patient. Treatment relieves spinal and extremity pain, decreases stiffness and muscular spasms, and increases mobility and range of motion. Treatment also minimizes risk of fall injuries, and decreases spinal stress and degeneration. This is in addition to decreasing arthritic conditions and tissue inflammation while enhancing tissue healing.
At Georgia Clinic of Chiropractic, we recognize that although two patients may be of the same age, no two patients are alike. Through extensive research and patient history, we are able to customize treatments specifically for the older patient. We also specialize in several forms of instrument-assisted treatments that would be more gentle on patients with reduced bone density.
